Sandown School

Religious Education

At Sandown Primary we are committed to providing children with opportunities to engage fully in Religious Education. Our RE curriculum is rich and varied, enabling children to gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of a range of faiths and world views. This allows them to make connections between their own values and celebrate our diverse school and local community.

Through our RE programme we aim to:

  • Know about and understand Christianity as a living world faith, by exploring core theological concepts
  • Develop knowledge and skills in making sense of biblical texts and understanding how they impact the lives of Christians
  • Make connections between their own growing understanding of religion, themselves, the world and human experience
  • Gain knowledge and understanding of a range of world religions and worldviews
  • Build confidence, resilience and collaboration of our pupils
  • Develop inquisitive minds about other beliefs that allow them to be culturally aware and respectful of the world around them
  • Respectfully engage in debates and discussions, grounded in enquiry

Discovery RE® is an enquiry approach to Religious Education for Primary Schools
which consistently delivers excellent learning outcomes

RE is taught throughout the school through 64 Enquiry modules. These modules cover Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.

Christianity is taught in every year group, with Christmas and Easter given fresh treatment each year, developing children’s learning in a progressive way.

Following this scheme...

  • Makes RE a learning experience to look forward to
  • Provides a safe enquiry space
  • Encourages deep questioning
  • Enhances critical thinking and evaluation skills
  • Supports spiritual development
  • Equips them to celebrate diversity

RE today: In our world faith units, we make connections between Christianity and other faiths through enquiry and allow opportunities to reflect on our own British values.

Our RE curriculum is enriched further with visits from members of our local church leaders, visits to our local churches and celebrating other key religious festivals during the year.

Our RE curriculum is rich and varied, enabling children to gain a thorough knowledge and understanding of a range of faiths and world views. Children feel safe to learn new things and share their beliefs and thoughts with others in an accepting environment. By the time children leave our school they will:

  • Ask and offer possible answers to challenging questions about the meaning of life, beliefs, nature of reality and morality
  • Have an understanding and knowledge of the religions studied, including key vocabulary
  • Have the ability to ask reflective questions about religion and world views
  • Have a sense of self, identity and belonging to flourish within the community and be responsible citizens
  • Show respect, tolerance and understanding of all religions and beliefs – children will have a stronger awareness of the world around them and will be mindful of the beliefs of others
  • Have the ability to link the study of religion and belief to personal reflections on meaning and purpose
  • Gain confidence and skills to make decisions, self-evaluate, make connections and become lifelong learners.
